In April 2021, personal data of over 500 million Facebook users were leaked on a hacking forum. Out of which, about 96,7 million personal data of EU/EEA citizens were on the leak. The leaked data includes full name, Facebook ID, birthday, phone number, locations, relationship status, account creation date, and other biographical information, and in some cases, email.

Even though the leak did not include financial information, health information or passwords, it still leaves victims vulnerable. Those data could be used by cybercriminals to impersonate the users or scam them into handing over login credentials. For this reason, SOMI has instigated this campaign to warn and protect its participants.

This matter is especially serious as the leak contains about 500 million phone numbers. When matching phone numbers are out there, they can be used to tie people to their accounts or profiles. Phone numbers in particular are often one piece of information that people retain for a long period of time.

As this breach mainly concerns phone numbers, which most often cannot easily be changed. We recommend you follow these steps to secure your Facebook account:

  • Use strong passwords that include at least 15 characters, upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Enable 2-factor authentication on your account. Try third-party authentication apps to generate login codes.
  • Change your Security and Login Settings, enable alerts for any type of unrecognized logins.
  • Update your data – remove unnecessary personal information.
  • Beware of ‘Smishing’ (SMS-phishing) attempt. Do not click on any links or reply to SMS messages from any unknown sender.
  • Retrieve your personal data from Facebook. SOMI can collect your personal data on your behalf and investigate whether such data has been collected in compliance with GDPR.

In four simple steps you can check if your data is part of this Facebook breach.

However, please subscribe to SOMI to stay informed about our future actions that you might be able to participate in, in particular in all those cases in which EU/EEA entities may have been collecting your personal data.

Are there any costs?

Since February 2022, we started introducing fees for GDPR services through our app. This step was necessary to guarantee quality and to be able to continue to work in a cost-effective manner. It offers us the opportunity to continue to expand our future services in the field of privacy and data protection.

Why do I need to verify my phone number?

In case your phone number matches the leaked data, it is necessary for us to verify your phone number in order to prove that the phone number belongs to you, before we can show you any information that was on the leak. This process is to ensure that your data is being well-protected and that no one can access your personal data, except you yourself.

For this campaign, SOMI verifies phone number by SMS verification. We will send a 6-digit verification code to your mobile phone in an SMS text message, and you are required to insert this code on the designated page on the SOMI app.

Am I eligible for the resource compensation?

SOMI offers ten times a resource compensation of € 1.000 each to anyone who can prove that his/her leaked personal data must have been included in this Facebook leak from the period after the GDPR was introduced (25th May 2018). We will select the winners based on the usefulness of information in court as well as the assistance therein provided.

The rewards will be paid to your bank account once SOMI has completed its investigation and has been able to decisively verify that the information provided has conclusively identified the timeframe of the data scraping to the post-GDPR period. Our  Crowdsourcing Participation Terms and Conditions apply.

Please send the information to us at and we will get back to you.

What happens to my personal data?

With our experienced security development team, our users’ personal information and files are kept encrypted on our server for the duration of this campaign, possibly including the duration of any subsequent legal action. The data collected from third parties will also be encrypted when processed. All data subjects are required to use their login credentials prior to obtaining any access their datasets. SOMI also uses 2-factor verification for both user and employee accounts for extra layers of security.

It goes without saying that SOMI attaches great importance to privacy and data protection. SOMI processes your personal data as described in our  privacy policy and in line with GDPR.

What is “Collect & Investigate”?

SOMI offers additional services for users who want to further collect their data from Facebook. You can subsequently access such personal data and all relevant information safely via your account on or by our SOMI app.
